A very dangerous idea virus seems to be spreading in today’s new age of widespread media and information dissemination. From the Columbine killings to Virginia Tech, school kids seem to be losing their minds as the lost few don armour and weapons and go on killing sprees for whatever reason they deem fit.

A news story which broke a few days ago covered a kid from a Krugersdorp high school who donned a mask similar to Joey Jordison, the drummer from Slipknot, pitched up at school with a set of samurai swords and went on a killing spree. Jacques Pretorius, his first victim, had his throat slit with one these swords and was found lying in a pool of blood before the school day began. The perpetrator, who was un-named in the article, then went on to stab another scholar in the head and two school gardeners, one in the back and the other in the face. They are in serious conditions in the hospital.

The weird aspect of this story, like so many others like it, is that the killer was found sitting chatting to other people as the police arrived to arrest him. Police even reported that he was very calm when they came to arrest him and didn’t resist arrest. He even approached the principal and asked “Wat nou, meneer? [What now, sir?]” just before the school’s morning assembly began.

The student claimed that he was urged by Satan to kill the children, and his dress-up as the drummer from Slipknot is no doubt related to his acts.

His friends said he was a quiet boy who kept to himself. “They said they all thought he was a nerd,” said Raubenheimer.

Another witness was told that the boy spent a lot of time on the internet. His friends apparently said “his eyes looked mad” just before the attack.

Pierre Eksteen, who is in charge of a school support network for children, told reporters outside the deserted school grounds that Satanic music was probably the cause of the attack.

“He came here camouflaged as the guy from Slipknot. We know the wrong kind of music and drugs have bad effects. Young people need to be informed of the effects of bad Satanic music,” said Eksteen.

His schoolmates have claimed that he was “quite a nerd” and was quiet and kept to himself. A serious discussion has since erupted in the media asking questions around what exactly satanism is and how the effects of music such as that of Slipknot can urge children to commit such horrible acts of violence. This is also not the first time that the lyrics and music of Slipknot has been claimed to incite violence and murder.

My question is... how far will all this go? Should there be no responsibility placed on the parents of such children? Moral values and a lifestyle of media-glorified instant-gratification which favours some kids and isolates others will force kids in different directions. If parents don’t give their kids sufficient attention and direction and instil in them some form of moral values, make no mistake, these kids will get their values from somewhere else. And if the only form of moral influence available to them is a band like Slipknot, God help us all.

I’m teacher and when I see this kind of madness proliferation, the only thing I can do is wait for my turn to deal with it...

@Celso Camargo Thanks for your comment, I think you still have a great opportunity to turn the tide and make the kids realise all their options, alternatives and potential. Don’t let this example be the one to get you down... it’s the exception... let’s make the rule one of greatness.

Extremely dangerous trend. Music has in the past inspired to kill or commit suicide. These irresponsible singers and bands like Slipknot must be banned from churning out such music. Also, the drug and sin and finally suicide lives of musicians have also awed many young people to end their own lives.

That seems to be an incredibly ignorant statement my friend. Why should bands like Slipknot be banned?

Have you actually looked up any of their lyrics or listened to their music? Much of it is intense, and possibly violent, but not Satanistic. Seriously, look it up.

Secondly, if you ban that sort of music, where do you draw the line? Who decides what sort of music is acceptable and what isn’t? By doing that, you are also infringing on peoples rights to choose.

Thirdly, this sort of music affects people in many different ways; some people find in it an outlet for their anger, while others find it a cayalyst, something that triggers a reaction. These people are by far the minority of the population (otherwise metal fans worldwide would be committing murders).

As a matric student in south africa, i think that the problem is not the music, but rather the environment. I can guarantee you that that kid didn’t do this without a reason; he was picked on, ostracized etc. The solution isn’t banning outside influences, its educating children so that they dont treat other, smaller, less popular kids like shit.

Yeshiel is right. Banning a certain genre of music does not help at all. In this case, you would need to ban Richard Marx for his sad love songs that some depressed teen somewhere might have been listening to while he slit his wrists in the name of lost love. Don’t you think?

It is only the parents, teachers and in the case of older children and adults, the peers that have to keep an eye out for such things.

All of you are correct, while @Yuzaini might have been a bit extreme in terms of banning, he did have the right form of thinking in terms of us really critically looking at the music ourselves and our kids are listening to. I mean this is not the first time that Slipknot lyrics were used as a basis for some violent crime, that alone is a basis to take things seriously.

As with @Yeshiel Panchia and @Jayashree yo uare correct as well, there are many other factors involved in this to just blame the music, even if the media does play that aspect of the crime up a bit more than the other factors. I personally haven’t seen any background info on his upbringing, parents, treatment at school, etc. All we know is that he was quiet.

There are a lot of variables here.

Thanks for replying. Yes banning might sound a bit too harsh for some, but perhaps it is the only remedy. When video games can be banned or rated then why not music if it inspires violence? Musicians have been extremely irresponsible in the name of artistic freedom. I believe the environment that a person is in is also responsible on how the person might react to certain music or game, but giving an ideal environment is next to impossible and therefore these bands are there.

you callin slipknot SATANIC!!!!
No more proof is needed that you dont know anything at all about metal.
If slipknot is satanic, what do you call the extreme black metal bands like gorgoroth or darkthrone.
They burn churches in norway!!!

Okay, Let’s not get too emotional here. The kid who committed the murders said Satan told him to do so. He also happened to be listening to Slipknot and dressed up as the band’s drummer.

No, not all metal bands are satanic, nobody is saying that, all they’re saying is that when slipknot starts pushing lyrics such as ”I wanna slit your throat and f*** the wound.” It starts becoming a problem when people actually start doing that stuff and of late it seems people are using them as inspiration.

My ultimate question when it comes to the kids is ... where the hell are the parents? don’t they have some responsibility when it comes to teaching their kids some self-respect, giving them some self-esteem and common sense?

I listen to a fair bit of Slipknot, so is ”I wanna slit your throat and f*** the wound.” from one of their songs? Even then, i still think that it should not be banned. Artistic expression is unique to the individual, and just because we lack understanding of it does not give us the right to restrict it.

I totally agree with you when it comes to ”where are the parents”. I think thats one of the reasons why things such as Satanism and music are being blamed; people dont want to be shitting all over poor grieved parents. It also makes less of a headline when you’ve just got some poor parenting, but if you can link killing to some big international musicians, you have yourself a story.

Also, with regards to the Satanism thing, i did some research, and Satanists seem pretty against indiscriminate killing. Also, less than one percent of cult like killings committed between 1960 to 1989 were proven to be Satanic. Go on to Wikipedia and search for

”Satanism”
”Satanic Ritual Abuse”

Its actually quite interesting how clearly this shows that journalists who use Satanism in their headlines know fuck-all about it.
